Greater Western Sydney is home to a lot of young people who are committed to making a difference. The Outstanding Youth Leader Award Recognises the energy and enthusiasm that young people share with their communities
Below are our nominees for the 2017 ZEST Award for Outstanding Youth Leader (12-25):
Sara Mansour – Winner
Sara Mansour is 23 years of age and has exceled in creating and maintaining a vibrant arts and cultural platform for young people in Canterbury Bankstown. As the current host and co-founder of Bankstown Poetry Slam (at just age 19), Sara has made the slam the biggest regular event of its kind in the country. Sara additionally coordinates workshops in local high schools that empower young people to find their voices through spoken-word poetry. As a young Muslim woman of Lebanese background, Sara has inspired a cohort of young people in the community to express themselves in a safe and meaningful way.
Selwyn Lloyd – Highly Commended
Selwyn LLoyd is a young person who is committed to action. He is a passionate advocate for young needs, community harmony, identity and culture. Selwyn is a confident and capable youth leader that has had a major impact on the lives of young people. As the founder of the #Fistsdown, Selwyn’s passion and work have had a resounding effect on community. Selwyn’s work as a volunteer youth leader, a professional youth support worker and mentor has inspired young people into action and developed strong community partnerships between young people, NSW Police and a range of other agencies.
Ian is a dedicated youth worker running programs in the Mt Druitt area. He possesses the rare ability to develop connections amongst groups of young people that do not respond well to services. He has the unique ability to understand issues amongst many CALD and Indigenous youth and develop programs in response. He has been instrumental in responding to issues negatively effecting the community such as helping organize a truce between Granville and Mt Druitt youths in the 2016 train station brawl and supported and raised funds for the funeral of a local murdered Sudanese boy and for his mother.
Rowena Tran is an amazing youth leader who is dedicated to achieving for others. Rowena demonstrates outstanding capacity as youth delegate, advocate and mentor. Rowena has risen to become a prominent youth leader and advocate in our community and beyond. Rowena’s motivation is clearly her passion for social justice on range of issues – particularly regarding youth, refugee settlement and mental health. Rowena is an amazing team leader and mentor to other young people. Her enthusiasm to lead projects often sees her supporting and empowering other young people to develop their skills and grow their capacity to be change makers.
Sayed Rahmatullah Hussainizada
Sayed Rahmatullah Hussainizada is a leading young Afghan refugee and youth ambassador. Sayed has represented Australia at various international events. Sayed is a paralegal at Marque Lawyers, Board Member at Multicultural Youth Affairs Network and sits on the Advisory Board for Macarthur Work and Learning Program (MWLP). Sayed has completed a combined journalism/law degree from the University of technology Sydney and was recently awarded the Elizabeth Hastings Memorial Award for Student Community Contribution in recognition of his dedication to building the capacity of those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Amongst others, Sayed volunteers for the Afghan Fajar Association Incorporated to secure funding and enable the delivery of much-needed programs each year. These programs include a leadership program and camp for migrant youth, a Dari language school, a learn-to-swim program, settlement support services for new arrivals, and community engagement events to help create a more vibrant and connected multicultural Australia.
